The 5 Pieces You Need In Your Spring/Summer 2022 Wardrobe

Despite only being founded six years ago, Percival has made quite the name for itself in the world of menswear. Capitalising on its unique blend of relaxed tailoring, British charm and throwback feel, fans include everyone from David Beckham to Alex Turner.

What it lacks in decades of history it more than makes up for in interesting design details and easy-to-wear pieces, with its shirts being a particular highlight season after season. From Cuban collar styles to contemporary updates on classic work shirts, Percival almost exclusively manufactures in the UK, so quality comes as standard.

So whether you’re looking to up your shirt game or you need an entire wardrobe overhaul, Percival is a great place to start. And now the London-based label has launched its new spring/summer 2022 collection, with a playful campaign and updates on signature designs. Here’s everything you need to know.

Key Trends From The Collection

Breathable Linen

Linen is the consummate summer fabric. Lightweight, breathable and surprisingly durable, it’s ideal for warm days in the office, evening drinks and weekend barbecues – it can see you through all manner of social situations. Recognising this, Percival has turned to the fabric extensively as part of its new collection, crafting an unstructured suit from the yarn as well as a number of its signature Cuban collar shirts.

Stripes

When it comes to warm-weather dressing, stripes are a perennial pattern. While usually readily available in vertical designs, Percival has gone horizontal for SS22, crafting a series of knits out of multicoloured, breathable cotton fabrics.

There’s tonal stripes – incorporating shades of brown, orange, cream and off-white – which give off a slight 70s feel, along with a bolder red, blue, orange and black combination, ideal for injecting vibrancy into an otherwise minimal outfit.

Summer Knits

This is where Percival really comes into its own. The London brand excels with its lightweight knits, which perfectly border the smart casual divide and subtly reference old-school, mid-century menswear.

Highlights include the Nedry knit with its intarsia jacquard stripes, button-through front and versatile cut, which looks great done up or worn open.

Wearable Colour

For most of us, colour isn’t that easy to wear. It’s always tempting to invest in navy, grey and black, but that can quickly get boring. Enter Percival. The label has long championed colours that are bold yet wearable in its collections and this season is no different.

The versatile palette includes vibrant tones of forest green, brick orange, cream, sunshine yellow, pistachio and a range of blues.

Relaxed Tailoring

When it comes to building a modern smart casual wardrobe, Percival has you covered. The brand’s relaxed approach to tailoring works especially well in the warmer months, with the new collection incorporating a number of unstructured silhouettes in lightweight fabrics that are ideal for warmer weather.

Suits can often appear stuffy, but Percival has a tendency to lend them a relaxed edge, ensuring you’ll be both comfortable and sharp whether you’re at a wedding or on a first date.

5 Key Pieces For Spring/Summer 2022

Navy Linen Blazer

Linen crinkles easily, but that’s part of the charm. Embrace the sprezzatura with Percival’s linen blazer, which channels an Italian elegance usually only seen in classic photographs of Marcello Mastroianni.

With an unstructured cut, large patch pockets and a tailored fit, it’s ideal for summer weddings, garden parties, rooftop cocktails and anything in between.

Further channelling that classic Italian Riviera style is this Aperitif knit. With its popper front, multi-stripe pattern and textured cotton construction, this lightweight, breathable design is perfect for summer evenings (preferably with a cocktail in hand).

Wear it with tailored trousers, jeans or shorts and finish with penny loafers for bonus style points.

Tapestry Cuban Linen Shirt

Summer shirts don’t get much better than this. A Percival signature, the Cuban collar design features an open neck, button through front and single chest pocket, but it’s been updated with a tapestry-style pattern, embroidered in the heart of London.

Featuring handstitched bees, plants and a sun, it’s an eccentric way to bolster your style credentials this season.

Long Sleeve Cotton Shirt

Forget Oxford cloth button downs, this shirt might just be the ultimate everyday layering piece. Differentiated with its Cuban collar, chest pocket and squared hem, it is somehow smart yet still relaxed, allowing it to be worn for every warm-weather occasion.

Linen Everyday Trousers

When it comes to summer dressing, shorts are often the order of the day. But for certain occasions only trousers will do. This pair ensures you’ll remain cool, with its breathable linen fabric and comfortable drawstring waist, while also keeping you tailored with its sharp fit.

Wear them as you would a pair of chinos and combine with tees or polos, or further smarten them with lightweight shirting and unstructured blazers.

Percival Spring/Summer 2022 Campaign

Percival has a strong link with football. The brand famously dressed England manager Gareth Southgate during the side’s euphoric Euro 2020 run, keeping him sharp on the sidelines and in press briefings with knitted polos and tailored trousers. David Beckham is also said to be a fan of Percival, frequently turning to its wardrobe staples.

And then there’s Percival’s designs themselves. You don’t have to look far to notice the classic football references, from the striped knitted polos (which would have looked right at home in the terraces of the 80s), to the signature embroidered T-shirts complete with miniature Zidane, Ronaldo, Peter Crouch et al. It makes sense, then, for the brand to turn to the beautiful game for its latest collection, launching it with a conceptual, football-themed campaign.

The year is 1991 and Percival Arms FC have reached the cup final for the first time ever. The squad consists of a crack team of local talent – there’s ‘Mad Hands’ Harry, ‘Lightning’ Steve Johnson and ‘Big’ Eddie, all of whom are looking to make their mark on the biggest game of their careers. But there’s tension in the air, with every chance things are going to boil over before they even take to the pitch. Regardless of what happens, the team is dressed the part:

The playful campaign shows off the brand’s latest collection with personalities and friends of the brand. Hugo Chegwin, Jermain Jeans and John Thompson adopt their roles as underrated football stars, donning the latest knits, jackets and trousers dreamt up by Percival’s design team. With plenty of trademark colour and knitwear classics dressed both up and down, the collection is versatile, easy to wear and playful.
